A Japan Photo per Day - Dai-San Daiba

In 1853, planning to protect Edo against attacks from sea, the Tokugawa shogunate started the construction of 6 fortresses built on artificial islands. The fortresses were armed with cannon batteries - daiba in Japanese - hence the name of today’s islands Daiba and Odaiba. The main threat was at the time the Kurofune (Black Ships) fleet of Commodore Matthew Perry, which was just arrived.
