Japan Balks at U.S. Plans for Aircraft Upgrade at Okinawa Base - WSJ.com

Three days before a long-awaited shipment of upgraded U.S. Marine Corps aircraft is scheduled to arrive in Japan, controversy over their deployment is threatening to create a rift in both the ruling Japanese party and the broader security alliance between the two countries.

Japanese officials say a ship loaded with tilt-rotor aircraft, which are to replace 24 aging Vietnam-era choppers based in Okinawa, will dock in Iwakuni on Japan's main island on Monday, citing word from the U.S.
