Summer season kicks off as beaches open | Japan Update

Finally!  Winter’s drifting away, temperatures are getting warmer, and everyone’s itching to get outside and perhaps, go to the beach.

Good timing, because the beaches on Okinawa’s main island began opening the 17th, marking the very first beach opening at Azama Sun Sun Beach in Nanjo City.  Araha Beach and Sunset Beach, both in Chatan, will open the sands to the public on April 12th.  Tropical Beach in Ginowan City is ready for patrons on April 21st and Nishihara Kira Kira Beach opens the end of April.

Military beaches at Torii Station, Okuma Joint Recreation Center, White Beach and Oura Wan at Camp Schwab are open, but life guards will not be on duty until later in April.

Rental equipment hours on the base facilities are limited.

There are numerous civilian and military beaches on Okinawa, many of which are extremely popular:
