Japan Initiates Steps To Relocate US Air Base In Okinawa

The Japanese government has initiated steps for the relocation of the U.S. Marine air base in Okinawa to a less populated area in the prefecture.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday directed the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's secretary-general Shigeru Ishiba to continue efforts to persuade the party's Okinawa chapter to support the plan to shift the Futenma air station from the densely-populated Ginowan City to a less populated coastal area in the same prefecture, Japanese media reported.

The chapter has been calling for building Futenma's replacement facility outside the prefecture.
